Program Aims

1.) Provide pediatric trainees with a three-year longitudinal curriculum in global health

2) Train globally minded pediatricians prepared to understand and provide for the needs of all children including those from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.

Goals

  1. Develop a broad understanding of the social, political, economic, and cultural factors that affect the health and well-being of children around the world. 

  2. Recognize the impact of global activities on the physical, mental and social well-being of children both locally and abroad.

  3. Engage in global health advocacy to advance the health and well-being of all children.

Patient Care

  • Develop an approach to patient care that is culturally aware and patient-centered.

  • Identify the unique needs of patients and families of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds including but not limited to immigrants, refugees, non-English speakers and international adoptees. 

 

Medical Knowledge

  • Describe the epidemiology of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in infants, children and adolescents in our local community, nationally and internationally.

  • Understand and describe the pathophysiology of common diseases affecting children in communities globally with particular emphasis on the underserved.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills

  • Participate in global health advocacy efforts at the local, systems and policy level to ensure the optimal health and well-being of all children, both locally and globally. 

  • Demonstrate empathy and sensitivity for the barriers faced by patients and families in seeking care.

Practice-based Learning and Improvement

  • Recognize the challenges of caring for high-risk populations and begin to design strategies to respond to these challenges.

Systems-based practice

  • Compare and contrast access to, and quality of health care for children around the world and examine how these different systems of care affects child and family health outcomes.  

  • Utilize root cause analysis as a tool to understand the origins of poor health locally, nationally and globally.

Professionalism

  • Identify the responsibilities of pediatricians to respond to the social and environmental determinants of health.
